Change Management is a very important skill for leaders because it allows them to envision the possible future states of an organization and then deal with these in a manner that is adaptive. Leaders must be able to create goals, formulate methods of achieving these goals, and monitor the results that they have accomplished. In order for leaders to be able to do this effectively, however, they have to be able to envision the possible future states of an organization and how these would affect people within the organization. Leaders must also be able to change their organizational culture, or the way people view the organization, to accommodate future states of the organization. Change management skills are therefore an important skill that must be developed in all people involved in the organization.

Organizational Change Management is the science of making organizational change and the identification of the most appropriate course of action to make that change. This course of action may take the form of an organizational executive summary, a corporate strategy, a company review, a change management memo, a company overview, employee seminars, employee workshops, training seminars, and other forms of communication. The process by which organizational change management is carried out varies greatly depending on the nature of the change and the potential for disruption or resistance to the change. Organizational change management is therefore a continuous process that requires continuing assessment throughout the entire duration of implementation.

This is achieved by ensuring that all changes within the workplace impact employees directly and indirectly. Employees are informed of proposed changes through any number of mediums, including informal communication, internal communications, employee presentations, and formal employee communications such as employee newsletters or web sites. Employees also have the opportunity to voice their opinions via an organized workforce forum, informal employee meetings, informal discussions in the work place, and formal employee summits.

It also involves ensuring that any decisions are made in a manner that is consistent with the interests of all stakeholders. Organizational change management focuses on ensuring that any organizational changes are made in a manner which is consistent with both the long term organizational goal and the short term organizational goal. The short term goal is the current competitive environment, which may change over time. The long term goal is an organization's ability to provide goods and services, attract and retain talent, and remain competitive. In addition, any short term goals may also be in support of the organizational future state.

Change Management involves the discipline of creating and maintaining a positive culture, fostering employee motivation, communicating new technologies and benefits, developing good relationships with both current and potential clients, training employees on new technology, encouraging innovation and working in a socially and environmentally friendly atmosphere.
