Course Description

The Quality Online Course Design Seminar is a course intended for professors interested in learning more about instructional design, its impact on learners, and best practices to promote student success. This course will cover learning theories that influence instructional design, instructional theories and methods, and Polk State College’s Quality Online Course Rubric.

Course Purpose

The goal of this course is to assist and support you in redesigning an online course. You, the subject matter expert, will collaborate with instructional designers to enhance your unique learning environment.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this seminar,

  1. Learners will be able to summarize important instructional design techniques and processes.
  2. Learners will be able to apply learning theories to online course design.
  3. Learners will be able to engage in a community of practice, to actively participate in peer-to-peer conversations centered on course evaluation.
  4. Learners will be able to analyze and process the efficacy of course design through the utilization of the Polk State College Quality Online Course Rubric.

Course Structure

This course is prescribed online in an asynchronous format. All content is self-directed and must be completed in sequential order. Participants must join the virtual community of practice meetings for whole-group discussions. Additionally, you are expected to attend at least one 1-on-1 meeting with an instructional designer.

Textbook and Required Materials

This course utilizes open educational resources (OER), available at no cost to you. Materials will be made available to you via Canvas. You will be expected to access any course materials provided. Additional course materials are provided in the “Additional Resources” module and are optional.

Technology Requirements

This course is prescribed via the Canvas learning management system. Community of Practice meetings will be held via Zoom. You may also receive some communication, including meeting invites via email.

Technology tools used in this course include but are not limited to Zoom, Canva, VidGrid, Harmonize, and Articulate Rise 360. These tools work best using a Google Chrome browser. Further information for these tools, including privacy policies and accessibility statements, will be provided in the course.


Grading and Feedback

This seminar utilizes a “Complete/Incomplete” grading policy for assignments. To successfully complete this course overall, all activities and assignments must be graded as “Complete”.

You may estimate feedback to discussions and assignments to be given within one week of your submission. Extensive feedback will be given through submission comments. You may access your progress via the Grades tab in the course navigation. Facilitators will also be active on the discussion boards and interact with the participants regularly.

Late/Missed Work Policy

This course is fast-paced and due dates are important. We understand that you have other obligations but know that we expect your full participation, just as you would your students. Please contact us with any circumstances that may affect your work. We remain flexible with due dates and intend to assist wherever possible.

Attendance Policy

Your full participation in this course serves as your attendance. You must complete all assignments, attend one virtual kick-off meeting, two virtual community of practice meetings, and at least one 1-on-1 meeting with an instructional designer.

Academic Dishonesty Policy

Collaboration is encouraged and the sharing of ideas and strategies is crucial to this seminar; however, please use your own original work for assignments. Be sure to cite your references where appropriate using APA format.

Plagiarism Detection

There will be no plagiarism detection tool used in this course.
